August 11, 2025 | Campus News

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), in collaboration with SPH Media, hosted a campus dialogue titled “The Role of Media in a Changing World” on 23 July 2025. The event, held at the University’s auditorium, welcomed the participation of approximately 200 students and lecturers from the Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries (FCCI).

The dialogue session was held in conjunction with the 30th anniversary SPH Media’s Chinese daily, Lianhe Zaobao, where SPH Media is organising a series of regional campus engagements, with TAR UMT serving as the exclusive institutional partner in Central Malaysia.

The event saw the presence of Prof Dato’ Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT and Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor-in-Chief of Lianhe Zaobao. The event commenced with a keynote by Zaobao’s Kuala Lumpur correspondent Ms Seoow Juin Yee, who shared insights on the challenges of reporting in Malaysia as a foreign correspondent, as well as differences in media practices between Singapore and Malaysia. This was followed by an address by Mr Goh, who discussed how the media industry is responding to rapid changes in technology, particularly the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism.

Following the presentations, a panel discussion was held featuring Ms Seoow, Mr Goh, and Assoc. Prof. Dr Chang Teck Peng, Programme Leader for the Doctor of Philosophy in Communication and the Master of Arts in Communication.

Drawing on his journalism background, Dr Chang discussed the ethical and creative issues of using AI in content creation. While acknowledging its usefulness for research, he emphasised that great writing reflects a unique voice and personal style, which AI may not replicate without raising ethical concerns or diminishing the author’s identity.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, during which students and faculty members actively participated in the discussion.
