The Demand For Accounting Technicians
by StudyMalaysia.com on February 6, 2025 | Career Guide, Top Stories, Accounting and Finance
In an era marked by economic uncertainty, automation, and evolving financial regulations, many companies are seeking cost-effective recruitment strategies. The demand for skilled Accounting Technicians continues to grow across industries. Research by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) has consistently highlighted the global shortage of practical accounting skills, especially in developing and emerging markets.
Accounting Technicians—often known by various titles such as Accounts Executive, Audit Assistant, Accounts Supervisor, or Assistant Manager—play a vital operational role in producing reliable financial information. When equipped with the right technical knowledge and practical skills, they handle the day-to-day tasks of accountancy, freeing senior finance professionals to focus on strategic business decisions.
In larger organisations, this division of responsibility enhances financial management and reporting efficiency. In smaller businesses, Accounting Technicians frequently take on a broader scope, managing all aspects of financial operations—from preparing accounts and budgets to advising on financial planning and business expansion.
The World Bank has emphasised in its Reports on the Observance of Standards and Codes (ROSC) that mid-tier accounting professionals such as Accounting Technicians are essential to both corporate and public sector development. In many emerging economies, the availability of well-trained finance personnel is limited. Strengthening this mid-tier segment is critical to public financial management reforms and sustainable economic growth. (Source: CAPA – Accounting Technicians 2020 Update: Recent Developments)
Recognising this, IFAC—together with AAT (The Association of Accounting Technicians, UK)—developed an Illustrative Competency Framework for Accounting Technicians to establish global benchmarks for skills and professionalism.
AAT, a leading international professional body for Accounting Technicians, continues to offer globally recognised qualifications that help make a finance career more accessible. In Malaysia, AAT qualifications provide students with industry-relevant skills and knowledge that are highly valued by employers.
“The curriculum prepares students progressively, from foundation to professional levels,” says Mr Woon Chang Lung, formerly a Credit Controller in a public-listed company. “It not only covers core accounting competencies but also important areas such as ethics and the design of robust accounting systems to prevent fraud.”
Ng Pui San, an AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting alumnus in Malaysia, shares: “AAT’s flexible learning and exam schedules allowed me to study effectively while working. The knowledge I gained was directly applicable to my job in an accounting firm, and it helped me become more efficient and confident at work.”
Study Pathways
Whether you’ve just completed SPM, IGCSE, STPM or equivalent—or you're considering a career switch—AAT offers clear progression pathways. Its qualifications cater to various entry and experience levels. School leavers typically begin with the Level 2 Foundation Certificate, progressing up to the Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting in as little as 1? years.
These qualifications also serve as stepping stones to professional accounting bodies such as ACCA, CIMA, and ICAEW. AAT graduates often receive generous exemptions, reducing the time and cost to obtain full professional credentials.
Professional Recognition
AAT graduates are entitled to use the MAAT designatory letters, signalling their professional status. This credential is respected by clients and employers worldwide and reflects the practical skills and ethical standards of its holders.
AAT assessments are conducted via computer-based exams, offering flexibility and continuity even in changing circumstances. Students can choose to study either online or in-person, depending on the training provider's delivery mode. A full list of AAT Approved Training Providers in Malaysia is available .
Student Testimonial
Narrendra Kumaar is currently pursuing CIMA via the CGMA Finance Leadership Programme. His journey began with the AAT Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping and the AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting—an accelerated and cost-effective path to a professional accounting career.
After completing his IGCSE at age 16 with straight A’s, Narren weighed his study options carefully. He realised that tuition fees at private institutions could exceed RM50,000 just for a diploma. During a gap year spent working, he discovered that AAT provided a globally recognised pathway at a much more affordable cost.
Enrolling with System & Skills Training Concept (SSTC), an AAT Approved Training Provider, he completed both AAT qualifications in under 15 months. With these qualifications in hand, he had the option to join a Big Four accounting firm but chose instead to gain experience and continue his studies toward becoming a Chartered Management Accountant.
