Course Overview

The Master of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Program is the first medical specialist training programme at KPJU. It provides candidates with the opportunity to be trained in the management and treatment of a wide variety of ENT diseases in 8 accredited KPJ Specialist hospitals. This 4-year programme follows the established UKM/UM/USM curriculum in Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. The programme provides an innovative competency-based education programme featuring one-to-one, hands-on apprenticeship training. Candidates are supervised by a group of dedicated and experienced KPJ ENT consultants. The Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is our collaborator in the curriculum design and assessment to ensure high quality training programme. The Master of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery KPJU received full accreditation by Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) and recognized by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

This is a full-time, 4 years clinical training programme in Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

All candidates accepted into this programme will be appointed as Registrars (trainee Medical Officer) at one of the KPJ Specialist Hospital (the base hospital) throughout the course. Registrars will receive a monthly RM 5,000 cost-of-living allowance from the hospital. Registrars have to serve at the Emergency Department of the hospital (base hospital) for 48 hours a month (about 7 sessions per month). The rest of the time, candidates are rotated to accredited KPJ Specialist hospitals to undergo training in Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.   

During the 4 years training, candidates undergo a 3 to 6 monthly rotation at accredited KPJ Specialist Hospitals. At each hospital, candidates will perform clinical duties as a registrar at the ENT clinic of a senior ORL-Head and Neck consultant. The hallmark of this training programme is “one-to-one” apprenticeship training, where each candidate will perform clinical duties with a senior consultant at the clinic, ward and in the operating room. The consultant provides close supervision and immediate feedback to candidates.

Candidates will also be posted to undergo clinical training in short durations at ENT Department UKM Medical Centre and Ministry of Health hospitals, especially for subspecialty training not available in KPJ Specialist Hospital.

Candidates are to write 10 case-writeups and encouraged to send articles for journal publication. Candidates are also required to conduct research and the research-work must be submitted as a dissertation 6 months before the final examination. Candidates will sit for the Part 1 examination at UKMMC and Part 2 – the final National Conjoint Board of Surgery examination conducted at public universities. After passing the final examination and fulfil all the training requirements, candidates will be awarded Master of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, KPJ Healthcare University.

Entry Requirements

Malaysian Students:

• Possess a Medical Degree (MD, MBBS, and MBChB) or equivalent qualifications from Universities recognized by the Senate of the University ; and

• Must be registered for medical practice by Malaysian Medical Council (MMC); and

• At least 2 years of clinical practice (excluding housemanship); and

• Pass the written screening examination; and

• Performance at interview
