Course Overview

The Master of Science in Applied Biotechnology offered under the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FOAS) is a robust, skill-oriented programme designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in cutting-edge biotechnological applications. Students gain a deep understanding of core biotechnological principles while developing essential experimental and technical skills through extensive laboratory training. The programme offers specialisation in areas such as agricultural and environmental microbiology, omics technologies, and advanced cell and tissue culture, with electives covering topics like natural product biotechnology, food microbiology, and intellectual property rights. Emphasising research methodology and data analysis, the programme prepares graduates for leadership roles in agriculture, healthcare, and environmental sciences.

Entry Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree (Level 6 Malaysian Qualifications Framework, MQF) in Biotechnology or related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 as accepted by the HEP Senate; OR
• A Bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Biotechnology or related field with at least CGPA of 2.50 and has not achieved CGPA 2.75 can be accepted subject to a rigorous internal assessment; OR
• A Bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in Biotechnology or related field but has not achieved CGPA of 2.50 can be accepted subject to a minimum of 5 years’ working experience in the relevant field.
• Other relevant equivalent qualifications accredited by MQA.

English Language Requirements

• Malaysian Students: MUET Band 4.0 / IELTS Band 5.5 / CEFR Low B2 / TOEFL iBT 46 equivalent; OR Exemption if medium of instruction during Bachelor studies was in English
• International Students: IELTS Band 5.5 / CEFR Low B2 / TOEFL iBT 46 equivalent; OR Exemption if medium of instruction during Bachelor studies was in English
