Institution Overview

Background

ELS Language Centres opened its first centre in Washington D.C in 1961. Over the half century since its opening, ELS has helped more than a million students from over 140 countries master English in order to pursue their dreams of entering universities, having more successful careers and becoming "citizens of the world."

ELS Language Centres Malaysia is a franchise of the US-based ELS Language Centres. Established in 1990, ELS Malaysia has since grown to having 6 purpose-built English language training centres throughout Malaysia, namely Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Bintang, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Johor Bahru and Penang.

International Recognition
140 countries with nearly 100 centres worldwide. The ELS CIEP Proficiency Levels are the third most widely accepted standardised proof of English qualification in the US – with more than 600 universities and colleges recognising its Advanced Levels.

Stability
ELS only very recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in the US and its 20th year in Malaysia. Having taught more than 2 million students around the world, ELS is a trusted institution among its peers and has established countless linkages with institutions of higher education.

Curriculum
Building on its years of experience, ELS has developed its own unique curriculum, textbooks and language-learning software to help students master English. Our proven methods and resources have enabled ELS students to effectively enhance their English in the shortest time possible. Successful students will also be more academically prepared for their university studies as the ELS curriculum prepares them in various aspects of university assignments and projects.

Our professional, experienced and caring staff are dedicated to helping students progress in their English studies, and attain their higher educational and career goals. At ELS, we guide students every step of the way, from the time they enrol to the time they graduate.

Teaching Excellence
All ELS Instructors are qualified by education, training and experience. They are made up of Malaysians as well as native-speakers such as the British, Canadians, Australians and Americans. All ELS instructors are also required to take the ELS Teacher Certification Programme (TCP) that equips them with the specific tools, skills and methods to teach English the ELS way. Every ELS centre has an Academic Director who ensures the academic and teaching quality of the instructors.

Student Services
Learning English is an experience and sometimes can be a challenge. ELS makes the experience exhilarating and fun by making life easier for its students through its wide offerings of student services. From university programme counselling to group excursions to exciting destinations around Malaysia, students learn English outside the classroom and develop fond memories of their time spent at ELS.

Technology in Education
ELS is a strong advocate of technology in teaching and learning. It incorporates technology in several aspects of the student's English learning experience and encourages its instructors to use technology in their daily lessons. This culture better prepares students for a technologically-driven future.

Programme Recognition

ELS Malaysia is the only private language centre in Malaysia that has gained recognition from local universities and institutions of higher learning. Through ELS Malaysia's strong academic standards, more than 25 private colleges and universities in Malaysia along with 600+ colleges, universities and career schools in the USA, and a substantial number of universities and polytechnics in the UK, Australia and New Zealand recognise the ELS Proficiency recommendation in lieu of the TOEFL/ IELTS or other standardised examinations as a satisfaction of their English language admissions requirement.

In the 20 years since our first school opened, ELS Malaysia has served more than 150,000 students from around 50 countries.

Academic Facilities & Resources

The Language Technology Centre (LTC) is a special feature at all ELS centres in Malaysia. The new state-of-the-art LTC integrates computer-supported learning with classroom instruction to make the most of your class time. The LTC provides individualised learning paths, specialised content and support, and attention to specific language problems.

University Placement Express (UPX)

UPX is a comprehensive online university application service for ELS students. UPX is the first fully-integrated university application platform on the web that takes you from browsing a prospectus to successfully gaining admission into the university of your choice. Available as a free service to all ELS students, UPX helps in fast-tracking your university applications so that you can plan for your next step after graduating from ELS.

All universities and colleges featured in UPX recognise the ELS CIEP Proficiency Level 106 and 109. This means that you do not need to present any other proof of English competency such as an IELTS or TOEFL test score to gain admission into the institution. In Malaysia, we offer special scholarships for serious students who are financially unable to take advantage of our programmes. Tun Dr. Mahathir ELS-TESOL Internship Scheme
This internship and scholarship is for final year university students in a TESL/TESOL Degree Programme who wish to improve their English language teaching skills.
Tun Dr. Mahathir UPM-ELS Scholarship
This scholarship is aimed at SPM students and university graduates who would like to improve their English Language proficiency and lack the financial support to do so.

Awards & Achievements

In 2004, ELS Malaysia made Malaysia proud on being awarded the "Top Foreign Students Destination Award" by ELS USA. This is a laudable achievement for Malaysia as it gained recognition in a field which until then had been dominated by the more developed nations. This achievement contributes significantly to the good reputation of not only ELS Malaysia, but also Malaysia as a whole, especially when our country is promoting itself as an education hub to foreign students. ELS Malaysia plays a big role in providing these students the much needed English language training before they embark on their pursuit of tertiary education here in Malaysia.

Also, in 2004, ELS Malaysia was conferred recognition as the "Regional Centre for Teacher Training for ELS Language Centres USA". The TESOL, an English Language Teacher Training programme conducted at ELS Malaysia, is a comprehensive teacher training programme which provides the best training for individuals intending to be English language teachers.

Beginning 2010, the US Embassy has awarded ELS the contract to conduct the English ACCESS Micro scholarship Programme in Malaysia. The programme is run by US embassies across the globe – to teach English to underprivileged students.

In 2010, the Brand Laureate recognised ELS Malaysia as the #1 English School (Best Brand in Education under SME) in Malaysia under the category of Education.

In June 2011, ELS Malaysia was awarded the "Standard Bearers of Programme in University Pathways and Preparation Abroad" by ELS USA owing to its strong academic quality and reliability.
